Therapeutic Horticulture Day

Hello Friends,

Today is Therapeutic Horticulture Day worldwide so make time to do something or go somewhere special for yourself.

Just yesterday I was invited to visit Danesmoate U 2’s Adam Clayton; Guitarist, rock god and visionary gardener’s own paradise led by Darragh, Jane Powers and Joe, on the side of the Dublin Mountains. Before long we were embraced by the many trees planted over the past 40 years, and the colourful borders by June Blake, a day to remember forever.

Everybody was talking about Mount Congreve on the banks of the River Nore, where I hope to return too very soon

Recently I revisited Airfield Estate in Dundrum, the home of the Overend sisters and was delighted with how it has remained as it was, while moving forward with the times obviously loved and cared for by many. I would strongly recommend you to give this place a visit to restore, relax and unwind.

A trip to Fernhill Garden cannot fail to impress even the most stubborn gardener, the magnolias and rhododendrons will leave you breathless

Of course let’s not forget Kilruddery , Kilmacurragh, and the Botanical gardens in Glasnevin  or whereever you find yourself

all showing magnificent displays right now. A visit to these places beats shopping and working any time. You can stroll about lost in beauty and breathing clean air, your head full of visions to inspire and relax you, this is what you are meant to do in May

In your Nature podcast is a tonic for the soul, bringing you into the bog and down by rivers

There have never been so many ways to enjoy the wildlife outside your door, even if you are stuck indoors!

Having made pots of pesto from three cornered leek now stowed in my freezer, I hope to gather some elderflowers for cordial, so loved on a hot day in the garden.

Recently a local artist and I started to paint the lilac bearded iris in my garden, sipping peppermint tea, an activity I hope to continue through the summer days ahead.

Listening to Leonard Cohen while transplanting vegetables is another indulgence but nothing quite takes the place of just stopping long enough to notice details and take note or draw or paint Nature journaling …… is appreciating beauty, and recognising wonder of creation

A perfect activity right now

Therapeutic horticulture is a practice that embraces the healing power of nature to promote physical and emotional well-being. It involves using plants, gardens, and nature to help people improve their health, wellbeing and quality of life.

There are many reasons to celebrate therapeutic horticulture. First and foremost, it has been shown to be an effective therapy for a wide range of physical and mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. It can also help improve socialization skills, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase self-esteem.
